Kampala – After an illustrious career spanning nearly five decades, Lieutenant General Katumba Wamala officially retired from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) on Tuesday. The ceremony, held at the National Defence College, was attended by President Yoweri Museveni, senior military officers, and representatives from the Ministry of Defence. In his farewell address, Gen. Wamala highlighted the evolution of the Ugandan armed forces from a post‑colonial militia to a modern regional security partner. President Museveni praised Wamala’s “unwavering dedication, strategic foresight, and mentorship of a new generation of officers,” and presented him with a ceremonial sword. The retirement marks the end of a 47‑year tenure that saw Wamala serve in key positions, including Chief of Defence Forces and Minister of Works and Transport. The President also used the occasion to salute other senior UPDF generals, reaffirming the government’s commitment to professionalizing the military and enhancing regional peace‑keeping initiatives.
