I Learnt About King Oyo’s Cancer Illness Last Year – Museveni

Kampala – In a rare public statement, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda disclosed that he first learned of the late King Oyo’s battle with cancer during a private meeting in 2022. The comment came during a televised interview commemorating the 30th anniversary of the nation’s independence. Museveni praised the late monarch’s “courage and dignity” while urging regional leaders to improve cancer screening and treatment infrastructure. Health officials confirmed that King Oyo, a revered traditional ruler in the western region, had been receiving treatment abroad before succumbing to the disease earlier this year. The president’s remarks have sparked renewed calls for a continental cancer‑care strategy under the African Union’s health agenda.
