The historic Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda is plunged into a constitutional crisis after the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV’s ascension was contested by his mother, Queen Mother Kezia. While the kingdom’s council of elders officially installed Prince Rukidi IV as the new monarch, the Queen Mother filed a petition alleging procedural irregularities and claiming that the rightful heir should be her eldest son, Prince Kintu. The dispute has sparked public demonstrations in Fort Portal, with traditionalists urging respect for cultural protocols and opposition groups demanding a transparent succession process. Legal scholars warn that the case could set a precedent for future royal successions across Uganda’s monarchies, while the Ugandan Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has pledged to mediate a peaceful resolution.
