Kampala – After nearly half a century in uniform, Lieutenant General Katumba Wamala officially retired yesterday, ending a 47‑year career that saw him rise from a junior officer to one of the most senior figures in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). President Yoweri Museveni, flanked by senior generals, praised Wamala’s “unwavering dedication to the nation’s security and development.” In a televised ceremony at the State House, Museveni highlighted the general’s role in peace‑keeping missions across Africa, his leadership during the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict, and his recent tenure as Minister of Works and Transport. The retirement ceremony, dubbed “Boots Hang,” featured a 21‑gun salute, a fly‑past by the Air Force, and a farewell address by Wamala, who thanked his family and fellow soldiers for their support. The government announced a special pension package and a national day of remembrance for the contributions of long‑serving military personnel.
