Nairobi – The High Court heard today that no sureties have stepped forward to guarantee the bail of former Central Management Institute (CMI) boss, General James Birungi, who has been further remanded on charges of corruption and abuse of office. Prosecutors allege that Birungi, who led the state‑run agency for over a decade, siphoned public funds through a network of shell companies. The judge warned that continued non‑compliance with bail conditions could lead to a longer custodial sentence. Birungi’s legal team argued that the lack of sureties reflects political interference, but the court maintained that the law requires a credible guarantor before any release can be considered.
