High Court Dismisses Lukwago Assault Case Against Ofwono Opondo

Kampala – In a landmark ruling on Tuesday, the High Court dismissed the assault case filed by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago against former Member of Parliament Ofwono Opondo. The judge ruled that the evidence presented was insufficient to prove the alleged physical attack that Lukwago claimed occurred during a heated council meeting last year. Opondo, who has been a vocal critic of the mayor’s administration, was acquitted of all charges. Legal analysts say the decision underscores the difficulty of prosecuting political disputes in Uganda’s courts, where procedural hurdles often impede the pursuit of justice. Both parties have indicated they will seek reconciliation, but political tensions in the capital remain high.
