Kampala – Agriculture Minister Francis Tumwebaze revealed today that the government will cover all ancillary costs associated with the foot‑and‑mouth disease (FMD) vaccination campaign, meaning farmers will only be charged for the actual vaccine doses.
“The Ministry is committed to protecting our livestock sector, which is the backbone of our rural economy,” Tumwebaze said at a press conference in Masaka. “By removing the burden of transport, cold‑chain, and personnel fees, we ensure that every farmer, regardless of size, can protect their animals against this devastating disease.”
The policy follows a pilot program in the western region that saw a 35 % increase in vaccination coverage after subsidies were introduced. The government plans to roll out the new pricing model nationwide over the next three months, with an estimated budget of UGX 2.3 billion allocated for the initiative.
