Washington, D.C. – The Transportation Security Administration announced a pilot program that will allow certain passengers without boarding passes to access airport gates, reversing a policy that has been in place since the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Under the new “Gate Access Flex” program, travelers who are waiting for delayed flights, family members picking up passengers, or airline staff with valid credentials can request gate entry through a mobile app. The system will verify identity using biometric data and issue a temporary digital pass that grants limited gate access.
“The goal is to improve the passenger experience while maintaining the highest security standards,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “We have integrated advanced screening technologies and real‑time monitoring to ensure that only authorized individuals can enter gate areas.”
Airlines participating in the pilot include Delta, United, and Southwest. The program will be evaluated over a six‑month period before a decision is made on broader implementation.
