Rescue teams in Nepal successfully extricated two construction workers who had been trapped for nine days inside a flooded tunnel of the Upper Tamakoshi hydropower project. The workers, a 34‑year‑old electrician and a 28‑year‑old laborer, were rescued on Thursday after a coordinated effort involving the Nepalese Army, local fire services and international NGOs. The tunnel was inundated when unprecedented monsoon rains caused landslides and breached a nearby riverbank. Both survivors were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of hypothermia and minor injuries. The incident has prompted renewed calls for stricter safety protocols at large‑scale infrastructure sites in the country.
