U.N. Backs New World Map Showing Africa in Its True Relative Size

New York – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) endorsed a revised world map that accurately depicts Africa’s true landmass relative to other continents. The “Gall–Peters‑style” projection, updated with the latest satellite data, shows Africa’s area as roughly 30 percent larger than traditionally represented in the Mercator map used in most textbooks. UNESCO’s decision follows a two‑year campaign by African scholars and educators demanding a de‑colonised visual representation of the world. The new map will be distributed to schools worldwide and incorporated into the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal education resources, aiming to foster a more balanced global perspective.
