The High Court in Kampala has ordered the remand of Hon. James Kayiwa, Member of Parliament for Kumi East, on charges of accepting a bribe worth 8 million Ugandan shillings (approximately $2,200) from a construction firm bidding for a government road project. The court heard that a whistle‑blower, a former procurement officer, submitted a recorded conversation in which Kayiwa allegedly promised to influence the award of the contract in exchange for cash. Kayiwa denied the accusations, claiming they are politically motivated, and his legal team has filed an appeal for bail. The case has sparked renewed calls for stricter anti‑corruption measures in Uganda’s public procurement system.
