URA Chief Praises Tycoon Sudhir While Landlords Urged to Boost Rental Tax Compliance

In a high‑profile press conference, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Chairman John Mugisha commended industrial magnate Sudhir Patel for his exemplary tax record, noting that Patel’s recent investment in a mixed‑use development has generated UGX 1.8 billion in rental tax revenue. The URA used the occasion to launch a nationwide campaign targeting landlords, urging them to register rental properties, file timely returns and adopt digital filing platforms. According to URA data, only 42 % of residential landlords currently comply with the rental tax regime, resulting in a loss of roughly UGX 250 million annually. The authority warned that non‑compliant landlords could face penalties up to 50 % of unpaid tax plus interest, and announced a new mobile‑app that simplifies the filing process.
