After nearly five decades of service, Lieutenant General Katumba Wamala announced his retirement from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) on Monday. The 47‑year career, which began in 1977 as a junior officer, saw Wamala rise through the ranks to become the army’s chief of staff and later the Minister of Works and Transport. President Yoweri Museveni led a ceremony at the State House, saluting Wamala’s contributions to national security and development. In his farewell speech, Wamala thanked the troops for their loyalty and urged the next generation of officers to uphold the values of discipline and patriotism. The government confirmed that a formal hand‑over ceremony will take place next week, and Wamala will receive a state pension and a national honor for his service.
